India slider at ‘gold’ price in Dubai

A restaurant in Dubai has introduced what it says is the world’s first gold-covered vada pav, a costly twist on a Mumbai street-food snack.

The restaurant, called O’Pao, has christened the offering the 22-karat “O’Gold Vada Pao.”

The item, which can best be described as a slider-kind of a sandwich, is currently not listed on the menu on the restaurant’s website.

However, according to the Instagram post the restaurant shared, the dish costs AED99 (around $27 or almost INR2,000).

Vada pav or vada pao, the same thing spelt differently, typically costs anywhere between INR20 and INR40 on the streets of Mumbai, where it originated.

Its roots lie in the hurried lunches that factory-workers in the city would have, with time constraints leading to the consumption of the simplest of snacks to be brought to work.

A typical vada pav usually consists of a fresh-made bun cut and stuffed with a potato-filled deep-fried dumpling, accompanied by sauces smeared inside the cut bun. A single green chilli often accompanies the order.

O’Pao’s offering, however, sees the vada, or the dumpling, filled with truffle butter and cheese, and served with sweet-potato fries and a mint lemonade.

As of now, it is only given as a dine-in option, and is not available for takeaways.
