Adnoc eyes 2GW hydrogen growth

  • Under the terms of the agreements, Adnoc, BP, and Masdar will on UK and UAE clean hydrogen hub development
  • This development will be at an initial scale of 1GW in the UAE and 1GW in the UK

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company or Adnoc has signed strategic framework agreements with British Petroleum and Masdar, said local reports on Saturday, September 18.

The agreements are expected to include the potential for development of clean hydrogen hubs in both the UK and UAE at a scale of at least 2 gigawatts.

The framework agreements were signed on the sidelines of the official visit of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, to the UK.

The agreements were signed by Adnoc Managing Director and Group CEO and Masdar Chairman Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, who is also the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and, and BP Chief Executive Officer Bernard Looney.

Under the terms of the agreements, Adnoc, BP, and Masdar are expected to collaborate on UK and UAE clean hydrogen hub development at an initial scale of 1GW in the UAE and 1GW in the UK.

The hydrogen agreements are said to be in line with the UK’s recently announced commitment to achieve 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 and the UAE’s Nationally Determined Contribution of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 23.5 percent, also by 2030.

Adnoc and BP are expected to, as part of the agreements, also jointly identify areas for potential partnership in greenfield carbon capture and underground storage and best-in-class methane detection platforms.

Further, Masdar and BP will together explore opportunities to develop, build and operate sustainable energy and mobility solutions in urban population centers.
