  • The Global Remote Work Index, which evaluates 108 countries, is a crucial tool for remote workers seeking the best destinations for their work.
  • A WEF report, which surveyed over 800 companies employing more than 11 million workers, highlights remote working as a significant trend.

Davos, Switzerland — Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany have emerged as the leading countries for remote working, offering the best combination of cybersecurity, economic stability, infrastructure, and social safety, the latest Global Remote Work Index 2023 said.

The index, which evaluates 108 countries, is a crucial tool for remote workers seeking the best destinations for their work.

Published by NordLayer, a renowned security organization, the index draws its data from credible sources like the United Nations and the World Economic Forum.

It focuses on four main areas crucial for remote working: cybersecurity, economics, infrastructure and social safety, which includes protection from crime and access to human rights.

European Countries Dominate the Rankings

The index reveals that Northern European countries are at the forefront, with Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany topping the list. These countries are followed closely by Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Estonia, Lithuania, Ireland, and Slovakia. The dominance of European nations is evident, as they constitute the majority of the top 50 percent in the global remote work index.

Key Strengths of Top Countries

Denmark stands out for its exceptional internet quality, social inclusiveness, and healthcare system. The Netherlands is recognized for its economic stability, bolstered by its popularity as a tourist destination and widespread English proficiency. Germany, known for balancing cost of living with quality of life, boasts the world’s most affordable internet service.

The Future of Remote Work

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, which surveyed over 800 companies employing more than 11 million workers, highlights remote working as a significant trend. The report suggests that around 20 percent of respondents believe government policies promoting remote work could enhance talent availability in the coming years. Countries like Switzerland and sectors such as telecommunications are particularly supportive of this trend.

Despite a reduction in remote working options post-COVID-19, many experts believe that flexible working arrangements will continue to be a significant aspect of the job market. The biggest demand from employers, however, is for government funding in training and skills development, indicating a shift in focus towards equipping the workforce for a changing job landscape.

As remote working continues to evolve, the Global Remote Work Index 2023 serves as a valuable guide for individuals and organizations navigating the new dynamics of work and location independence.
