Moro Hub breaks ground for largest solar data center in region

DEWA and Huawei have broken grounds for the first phase of largest solar powered plant in Africa and Middle East.
  • The data center will be implemented by Moro Hub, a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA
  • The carbon-neutral green data center will use 100% renewable energy with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts

MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, and President of Huawei Middle East & Africa Steven Yi, have broken ground for the first phase of the largest solar-powered data center in the Middle East and Africa, set to be Uptime TIER III-Certified, official sources have said.

The data center will be implemented by Moro Hub (Data Hub Integrated Solutions LLC), a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA, at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, said the sources.

The carbon-neutral green data center would use 100 percent renewable energy with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts (MW), said local sources.

Al Tayer said, “Breaking ground for the largest green data center in the Middle East and Africa would be beneficial to achieve the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100 percent of energy from clean energy sources by 2050, as well as the Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy aiming to reduce electricity and water demand by 30 percent by 2030.”

He remarked: “The green data center that Moro Hub implements will enable global hyper-scalers to access carbon-free computing, and will also help organizations in their sustainability initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Steven Yi said, “Data is quickly becoming the new engine for economic expansion and diversification, and this project serves as an exemplar of combining digital and power electronic technologies to create greener, low-carbon ICT infrastructure powered through renewable energy.”

The reports said that this is the second solar-powered green data center in Dubai launched by Moro Hub.

The center will offer digital products and services using Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, such as cloud services, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), said reports.
