Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Rania Al Mashat, said the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is likely to address climate change issue and its effects on countries and people, local media reports said.

The UAE will host COP28 from November 30 to December 12, 2023 at Expo City Dubai.

Al Mashat said that the UAE’s hosting of the COP28, following Egypt’s hosting of the previous edition of COP27, comes in support of international efforts for climate action in the Arab region and the Middle East and North Africa region, and as a leverage for international focus on climate action in the region.

She noted that international reports indicate that the countries in the Middle East and North Africa region are most vulnerable to climate change risks, as 60% of the region’s population lives in areas that suffer severely from water stress, and 20 million people could be displaced due to climate change.

Al Mashat added that COP28 will see presentations on the most important results and joint action taken over a year within the National Platform for Green Projects (Novi) and the Sharm El Sheikh Guidebook for Just Financing.

She said that she participated in a series of COP28-related preparatory events hosted by the UAE to develop a roadmap to advance climate action in the region.

The Egyptian minister added that COP27 had adopted important results on climate action including the COP27 Loss and Damage Fund and the COP28 will complete international efforts in supporting developing countries and emerging economies to move towards green transition.
