  • Amman emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating drug addiction, especially among countries with shared borders
  • Iraqi delegation also expresses a strong desire for close cooperation with Jordan, citing the social, economic, and psychological damage caused by drugs

Amman — Jordan’s Minister of Health, Firas Hawari, met with the head and members of the Committee on Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances in the Iraqi Parliament on Tuesday to discuss prospects for cooperation in training health staff on the treatment of drug addiction.

During the meeting at the ministry, Hawari highlighted the deep-rooted and historical relations between Jordan and Iraq, as well as the two countries’ joint efforts and cooperation in combating drugs.

Hawari emphasized that Jordan is eager to work closely with Iraq to counter drugs, stressing the need for cooperation among all countries to combat “this scourge,” especially those with shared borders.

He also noted that Jordanian psychiatrists play a crucial role in devising plans for the treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, as well as in monitoring recovery stages at treatment and rehabilitation centers across the Kingdom.

The Iraqi delegation expressed a strong desire for close cooperation with Jordan, citing the social, economic, and psychological damage caused by drugs.

The delegation explained that their visit aimed to learn from the expertise of politically and economically stable countries, including Jordan, in the treatment of drug addicts and their reintegration into society after recovery.

As part of their visit, the delegation toured the drug rehabilitation center in the Amman suburb of Shafa Badran, where they were briefed on the treatment process.
