Leaders mull Arab Center for Food Security

The 22-member Arab League and its legislative body, the Arab Parliament, are planning to establish a food-security body for the region, said local reports have on Friday, September 3.

They have launched a series of meetings to explore the founding of the Arab Center for Food Security, said the reports.

The organization would be expected to enhance social and economic security and achieve sustainable development goals in Arab countries.

The head of Services Committee in the Shura Council and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Network for Food Security and Nutrition in Africa and the Arab World, Jehad Al Fadhel, was quoted by the reports as saying that the Arab Center for Food Security will provide a safe stock of food and non-food items in all Arab countries.

This is expected to achieve sustainability in the availability of food for all individuals, especially during exceptional circumstances.

The center would adopt the development of an Arab strategy for food security and coordination to provide a safe stock of food, with an integrated plan to deal during emergencies, challenges and crises.

It would also be expected to focus on adopting technologies for enhancing food production and preparing targeted research and studies in this field.

Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Kamal Hassan Ali affirmed the interest of the Arab League in projects that enhance the efficiency of Arab food security.

He also expressed keenness to refer the proposal to the relevant authorities in the league for research and preparation of a detailed study about it.
