DOHA — Qatar’s tourism sector has witnessed exceptional development, positioning the country as a top tourist destination, according to Akbar Al Baker, Chairman of Qatar Tourism and Qatar Airways Group CEO. In an interview, Al Baker highlighted the significant impact of hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022 on tourism, with a record-breaking 1.5 million tourists visiting Qatar in the first half of the year.

He emphasized Qatar’s cultural authenticity and modern infrastructure, along with ongoing efforts to promote the country as a world-class travel destination. Al Baker also discussed Qatar’s focus on cruise tourism, strategic partnerships, and a robust calendar of events throughout the year.

Al Baker stressed that the tourism sector in Qatar has witnessed exceptional development that made Qatar among the top tourist destinations in the region, especially after its distinguished hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which was a landmark event in the history of the State. The World Cup not only served as the most prominent sporting event in the world but also had a significant impact on various sectors in the country.

Al Baker highlighted the direct impact of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on Qatar’s tourism sector. The number of tourists visiting Qatar this year reached a record-breaking 1.5 million in just the first half of the year, showcasing the success of the tournament and its contribution to the country’s tourism growth.

The FIFA World Cup had a positive influence on the tourism sector, shedding light on Qatar’s rich culture and modernity. It successfully showcased Qatar as a world-class destination, offering an exceptional experience to visitors from the beginning of their journey to their stay and exploration of the country.

Al Baker expressed his gratitude for hosting the first FIFA World Cup tournament in the Arab world, emphasizing the twelve years of imagination, hard work, and infectious enthusiasm that led to its success. The event welcomed over 1.4 million visitors from around the world, introducing many to Qatar’s warm Arabian hospitality.

The tournament was a catalyst for significant infrastructure development in preparation for the event and aligned with Qatar’s long-term tourism strategy. This included the construction of state-of-the-art stadiums, a new metro system, a dedicated cruise terminal, the expansion and beautification of Hamad International Airport, and the development of Lusail Qatar’s smart city. These initiatives, along with unique districts and tourism attractions such as Msheireb Downtown Doha, showcased Qatar’s blend of modernity and authenticity.

Building on the success

Al Baker told QNA that Qatar Tourism is committed to building on the success of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and continuing to promote Qatar as a world-class travel destination. With its rich cultural heritage, modern infrastructure, and welcoming hospitality, Qatar aims to become one of the most sought-after destinations globally.

Qatar Tourism played a crucial role in supporting the success of the tournament by collaborating with various authorities and institutions in the country. Al Baker mentioned that Qatar Tourism’s efforts included enhancing the tourism infrastructure, developing new tourism products and experiences, and promoting Qatar’s unique cultural heritage and natural beauty to visitors.

To ensure visitors had a memorable experience, Qatar Tourism focused on delivering high standards across all touchpoints. Over 33,000 frontline service professionals participated in the Qatar Host program, receiving training to guide visitors. Qatar Tourism also increased the knowledge of over 700 global travel trade partners regarding Qatar’s diverse offerings.

Moreover, Qatar Tourism issued more than 3,500 licenses for holiday homes, providing visitors with a variety of accommodation options during the FIFA World Cup 2022. The organization worked with partners to regulate short-term property rentals, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.

Al Baker acknowledged the cooperation between Qatar Tourism, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, and FIFA in developing the Hayya Application. This application simplified the process for guests, granting them access to Qatar and facilitating their experience during the World Cup.

Qatar Tourism’s digital transformation journey played a critical role in promoting the country internationally. The organization received 13 international awards for its digital transformation efforts, leveraging technology to enhance the visitor experience, increase engagement, and drive tourism growth.

Collaboration was not limited to preparing personnel and logistics for the World Cup. Qatar Tourism worked with various institutions to enrich the tourist experience in the country. Partnerships with Qatar Foundation and Qatar University aimed to promote Qatar as a world-class education hub, showcasing the diverse educational opportunities available in the country.

In addition to these partnerships, Qatar Tourism launched the monthly “Qatar Calendar” initiative, gathering information from stakeholders to promote and highlight events taking place in Qatar. This comprehensive calendar provided locals and visitors with all the necessary details, including event dates, times, and locations.

Furthermore, Qatar Tourism collaborated with ten different shopping malls during its flagship annual event, Shop Qatar, to provide residents and visitors with unique shopping experiences. By bringing together various retail outlets, the event showcased Qatar’s vibrant shopping scene and attracted a wide range of shoppers.

While Doha remains a focal point, Qatar Tourism is also dedicated to highlighting locations outside the capital. The organization worked with stakeholders to promote tourist destinations and develop assets both within and beyond Doha. One notable collaboration was the hosting of The Visit Qatar GKA Freestyle Kite World Cup 2023 at Fuwairit Kite Beach, located just an hour’s drive north of Doha. This event allowed visitors to experience the natural beauty and recreational activities offered by the beach.

Additionally, Qatar Tourism unveiled The Outpost Al Barari, a first-of-its-kind accommodation in Qatar situated in a stunning nature reserve surrounded by sand dunes and desert wilderness. This unique lodging option showcased Qatar’s commitment to providing diverse and extraordinary experiences for visitors.

The development of the Middle East’s first-ever panda park was another significant achievement in Qatar’s tourism sector. Located 50 kilometers north of Doha, the park offered visitors the opportunity to observe pandas living in a spacious custom-built habitat, enhancing Qatar’s appeal as a wildlife tourism destination.

Doha continued to host a wide range of events and entertainment throughout the year, attracting regional and international visitors. Celebrations during Eid Al Fitr, for example, featured live performances by popular artists and engaging activities such as the “Shaun the Sheep” show. These events showcased Qatar’s dedication to providing entertainment and cultural experiences for visitors of all ages.

All these collaborative efforts highlight the significance of the tourism sector as a fundamental pillar of Qatar’s economic diversification under the framework of Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatar Tourism remains committed to its well-considered strategy, focusing on key areas for international visitation growth and leveraging Qatar’s unique assets to position the country as a leading global tourism destination.

As Qatar continues to surprise travelers with its diverse landscapes, cultural heritage, and world-class events, Al Baker emphasized that the country’s ongoing calendar of events and festivals would provide visitors with a year-round schedule of entertainment and cultural activities. From the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition to the Qatar International Food Festival, visitors could expect an array of exciting experiences throughout the year.

With major events such as the Formula One Qatar Grand Prix and the Geneva International Motor Show scheduled for later in the year, as well as the upcoming International Horticultural Expo 2023, Qatar Tourism anticipates attracting a significant number of visitors from around the world.
