Qatar’s Industrial Production index (IPI) reached 105.2 points in August 2023, a decline by 2.1 percent compared to the previous month (July 2023), and decreased by 0.6 percent, when compared to the corresponding month in 2022.
Released by the Planning and Statistics Authority, the IPI is a short-term quantitative index that measures the growth of various industrial sectors in economy. The relative weight of main economic sectors under this indicator include, Mining (82.46 percent), Manufacturing (15.85 percent), Electricity (1.16 percent), Water (0.53 percent).
Data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority on Tuesday showed a decrease by 3.2 percent in the Mining sector due to the decrease in the quantities of “crude oil petroleum and natural gas” with the same percentage, while “other mining and quarrying” increased by 2.0 percent, Qatar News Agency reported.
When compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (August 2022), the IPI of Mining decreased by 0.3 percent due to the decrease in the quantities of “crude oil petroleum and natural gas” with the same percentage, while “other mining and quarrying” increased by 1.3 percent.
The index of the manufacturing sector showed an increase by 2.2 percent in August 2023 compared to the previous month (July 2023).
The groups showed an increase include: chemicals and chemical products and basic metals by 2.8 percent each; cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 2.6 percent; beverages by 1.9 percent; food products by 1.2 percent, and rubber and plastics products by 0.1 percent;
However, a decrease was recorded in refined petroleum products by 0.5 percent. No change noticed in group of printing and reproduction of recorded media.
On the other hand, in terms of annual change, comparing to August 2022, a decrease of 3.1 percent was recorded, due to the decrease in the manufacture of refined petroleum products by 9.5 percent; printing and reproduction of recorded media by 9.1 percent; rubber and plastics products by 6.6 percent; chemicals and chemical products by 3.7 percent; food products by 2 percent and cement & other non-metallic mineral products by 1.6 percent.
However, an increase recorded in the manufacture of basic metals”by 6 percent and beverages by 4.8 percent.
In the Electricity, Gas, Supply sector, an increase of 7.9 percent was noticed in the production of “Electricity” between August 2023 and the previous month (July 2023). Comparing with the corresponding month (August 2022), an increase of 9.5 percent was recorded.
In the Water Supply sector, an increase of 2.6 percent was noticed in the production of ‘Water” between August 2023 and the previous month (July 2023). Compared with the corresponding month (August 2022), an increase of 4.6 percent was recorded. (QNA)
