Algiers, Algeria  – Algeria has initiated a diplomatic effort aimed at finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Niger, with the goal of preventing further destabilization in the region.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has begun a series of visits to Nigeria, Benin, and Ghana, all of which are member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The visits are part of consultations to develop a political resolution that would mitigate potential escalation and its adverse effects on Niger and the surrounding area.

The crisis in Niger follows the military overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26. While the junta has failed to restore constitutional order and ECOWAS has indicated a willingness to use military intervention, Algeria has taken a firm stance against such action. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that his country categorically rejects any external military involvement in Niger, deeming it a direct threat to Algeria’s security.

Algeria’s diplomatic efforts stem from a belief that dialogue and negotiation can provide a viable solution. President Tebboune has articulated that Algeria’s opposition to military intervention is rooted in observing the consequences of such actions in other conflict-ridden countries like Libya and Syria. With its extensive border shared with Niger and its proximity to other troubled nations, including Mali and Libya, Algeria is keen on preventing the emergence of further instability in its neighborhood.

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) has suspended Niger’s participation in AU activities until constitutional order is restored in the country. Meanwhile, ECOWAS has expressed intentions to deploy a regional force to reinstate constitutional order in Niger, with Mali and Burkina Faso potentially joining the effort.

Algeria’s diplomatic history, coupled with its strategic geographical position, positions it as a key player in the search for a peaceful resolution to the Niger crisis. The ongoing diplomatic efforts by Algeria reflect the nation’s commitment to regional stability and its determination to prevent the Sahel region from descending further into chaos.
