European Union has unveiled a new strategic partnership with the GCC, aiming to deepen the ties with the Gulf countries.

European Union High Representative Josep Borrell will present a new EU strategic paper on relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at a formal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.

The ministers of the 27-member bloc are expected to issue conclusions on the strategy paper after the discussions, a senior EU official told journalists in Brussels Friday.

The European Union on 18 May unveiled a new, strategic partnership with the GCC aimed at strengthening the blockآ‘s cooperation with the GCC and its member countries.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the GCC countries are an “important energy provider – for Europe and they will also be – leaders in renewable energy”.

He noted that EU-GCC cooperation is set to be strengthened in several areas, energy, green transition and climate change, trade and economic diversification, regional stability and global security, humanitarian and development challenges.

The two sides are expected to launch joint projects in the coming months in a number of areas, he said.

The official stressed that maritime security is a key issue in cooperation between the EU and the Gulf countries.
