Iran proposes ‘Joint Economic Union’ with Latin American countries

  • Iranian Vice President for Economic Affairs Mohsen Rezaei put forward the proposal in his meeting with the Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez.
  • President Diaz emphasized the need for expansion of comprehensive cooperation with Iran.

Iran has said there is a possibility of establishing a ‘Joint Economic Union’ with Latin American countries, particularly with Cuba, to facilitate economic cooperation.

Iranian Vice President for Economic Affairs Mohsen Rezaei, who is on a tour of the Latin American countries, said in his meeting with the Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez that Iran is ready for expansion of comprehensive relations and cooperation with Cuba, according to Iranian media reports.

Rezaei referred to Iran-Cuba’s good level of cooperation and friendship in the field of modern technologies and particularly campaign against the COVID-19 pandemic by jointly manufacturing a coronavirus vaccine.

“We need to further expand this cooperation to counter the enemies’ sanctions and plots hatched against the resistant nations, and of course that is what we have been doing thus far,” Rezaei added.

He said Iran highly respects the Cuban government and nation and their brave resistance against the usurper powers and attaches great importance to further strengthening the friendship bonds and cooperation with Cuba.

President Miguel Mario Diaz, for his part, praised the ideas of the Islamic Revolution and the resistance of the Iranian nation against the totalitarian demands of the world’s oppressor powers, the reports said.

“The Cuban government and nation highly respect the rich Iranian culture and the Iranian nation,” he added.

President Diaz emphasized the need for expansion of comprehensive cooperation with Iran, especially in commercial and economic, scientific and technological fields, adding, Iran and Cuba’s cooperation in vaccine manufacturing was a very successful step in the campaign against the sanctions and plots against the two nations.

The Cuban president, meanwhile, stressed that Cuba supports Iran’s natural right to benefit from peaceful nuclear energy.
He also referred to both countries’ efforts aimed at the expansion of bilateral banking and commercial ties.
