Putin discusses possibility of Iran joining BRICS in call with Raisi

Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Thursday, in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi, the possibility of Iran joining the BRICS group in the future and issues of expanding cooperation in international and regional affairs.

The talks also included Iran’s participation as a full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries in all fields, especially in trade, transportation and logistics, Russian News Agency (TASS) stated.

South Africa is scheduled to host a summit of the BRICS countries on August 23 and 24, which is expected to be attended by heads of all BRICS member states. 

Moscow will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The South African presidency announced last July that the Russian president would not participate in the BRICS summit.
