Sharjah Police arrest 6 for smuggling drugs worth $9.5 million

    • Sharjah Police’s Anti-Narcotics Department recently seized 215 kg drugs with a market value AED35 million ($9.53 million)

    • The cops seized 209 kg of crystal meth and 6.7 kg of heroin and opium in 182 boxes from them

Sharjah Police’s Anti-Narcotics Department recently seized 215 kg drugs with a market value AED35 million ($9.53 million), said local reports on Friday, July 2.

The cops also arrested six people in connection with this as part of an operation that began on a tip-off to the department, said the reports.

The department’s Director Lt Col Majid Al-Asam was quoted by the reports as saying that several teams of specialists were formed to seize the drugs, in collaboration with the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority and the Federal General Directorate of Narcotics Control.

He added that the six people who were arrested had with them smuggled substances in 182 boxes of various sizes.

These had 209 kg of crystal meth and 6.7 kg of heroin and opium, which together have a market value of AED35 million ($9.53 million).

The six people confessed to bringing the drugs into the country to store and distribute, the reports quoted Al-Aslam as saying.

The UAE has very strict drug laws, which entail sentences ranging from jail terms to even the death penalty. Even trace amounts — as little as 0.05 gram — found on people have been known to lead to their prosecution.

Meanwhile, Sharjah Police also reportedly announced the launch of two pilot projects — Drug Fingerprint and Smart Rehabilitation Clock — to bolster the anti-drug system in Sharjah and the UAE titled.
