Dubai, UAE– Dubai witnessed a 5.5 percent increase in energy demand in 2002, from 50,402 GWh to 53,180 GWh, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
The company has outperformed major European and American utilities with a reduced line loss of 2.2 percent and a world-record low electricity Customer Minutes Lost of 1.19 minutes per customer.
In 2021, energy demand in the emirate grew by around 10 percent compared to 2020. It had reached 50,202 gigawatt-hours compared to 45,712 gigawatt-hours in 2020.
In the first half of 2022, demand for energy in Dubai has shot up 6.3 percent to 23,096 GWh, according to Tayer.
DEWA provides electricity and water services to 3.514 million people living in Dubai and the Emirate’s active daytime population of over 4.7 million. These numbers are expected to grow to 5.8 million and 7.8 million, respectively by 2040.
