ABU DHABI — The UAE is celebrating its 47th anniversary of the unification of its Armed Forces today (May 6, 2023).

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has expressed his appreciation to current and former members of the armed forces, recognizing their patriotic role and dedication to protecting the country’s stability and enabling its continued progress.

“This decision remains a pivotal moment in the history of the UAE, as it strengthened the pillars of the country’s union and served to safeguard its achievements while cementing its position in support of peace and stability,” he said.

In his speech to the UAE’s military journal Nation Shield on the occasion, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, emphasized the significance of the decision to unify the UAE Armed Forces, stating that it is of equal importance to the Founding Fathers’ decision to establish the Union.

Sheikh Mohammed underscored that the decision to unify the Armed Forces fostered and enhanced the Union’s pillars, highlighting that “the Union would not have advanced, developed and maintained its sovereignty without defending the country’s borders.” He also added that the Emirati people would not have enjoyed security and stability without the outstanding efforts of the UAE Armed Forces.

Other officials, including Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, praised the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers, the Rulers of the Emirates, in creating a unified army under one leadership and one flag to defend the country’s security, stability, and achievements.

Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, also highlighted the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed and the Founding Fathers in unifying the UAE’s Armed Forces, stating that it symbolized the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity that consolidated national unity.

The unification of the UAE Armed Forces on May 6, 1976, was a vital and decisive step in the nation’s history, establishing the foundations of the UAE’s creation and contributing to strengthening cooperation and integration between the seven emirates while preserving the country’s gains, security, and stability in the face of challenges.

General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, said that the decision to unify the UAE Armed Forces was a milestone in the country’s history, as it instilled the values of loyalty and belonging in the hearts of Emirati citizens, ensuring the country’s prosperity and people’s well-being.

Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Bowardi, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, stated that the unification of the UAE Armed Forces was one of the most significant decisions in the nation’s history, fulfilling the aspirations of the Emirati people to create a force of peace and wisdom that would safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, security, and stability.

Staff Lt. General Eng. Issa Saif Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, praised the wise vision of the Founding Fathers, highlighting that the unification of the Armed Forces stems from the unity of purpose, destiny, vision, and future that unites the UAE’s people and leadership.

The UAE’s commitment to peace as a strategic decision was emphasized by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, who stated that the UAE Armed Forces protect this decision.
