  • The Kuwaiti prime minister gave a peek into the "New Kuwait" vision that aims to position the country as a global financial, commercial, and cultural center
  • He underscored Kuwait's resolve to bridge cooperation and offer solutions to human rights issues in keeping with international law and UN resolutions

New York, US— Kuwait has exhorted UN member states to back its bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for 2024-2026.

The appeal was made at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly by the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Highlighting Kuwait’s commitment to human rights, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf emphasized the nation’s intent to bridge cooperation and offer comprehensive solutions to human rights issues, aligning with international law and UN resolutions.

The Prime Minister also introduced the “New Kuwait” vision, aiming to position Kuwait as a global financial, commercial, and cultural nexus.

This vision, he noted, aligns with international economic and financial standards and is bolstered by a diplomatic approach rooted in Kuwait’s humanitarian legacy.

Addressing environmental concerns, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions, targeting carbon neutrality in the oil sectors by 2050.

He also acknowledged the Gulf Cooperation Council States’ role in championing the multilateral international community.

On the regional front, he expressed Kuwait’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, condemning the prolonged suffering due to unenforced UN resolutions and Israeli occupation.

He emphasized Kuwait’s advocacy for Palestinian rights, particularly their right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Discussing regional resources, the Prime Minister asserted that the natural resources in the submerged area adjacent to the Divide Zone, including the Durra field, are exclusively the domain of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

He also called on Iran to foster trust and engage in respectful dialogue, emphasizing the importance of maritime freedom.

In another significant statement, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf emphasized the validity of the agreement regulating navigation in the Khor Abdullah waterway.

This agreement, he stated, is pivotal for ensuring maritime security and preventing illicit activities. He expressed surprise at Iraq’s recent decisions concerning the waterway and urged swift action to address the implications of these decisions.

He concluded by reiterating Kuwait’s call for mutual respect, adherence to signed agreements, and compliance with relevant UN resolutions, emphasizing the importance of preserving good neighborly relations.
