Cairo, Egypt – Historic al-Azhar Mosque marked its 1084th anniversary of its founding on March 17, celebrated by al-Azhar ash-Sharif with distinguished scholars and leaders in attendance.
The event, held annually on the seventh day of Ramadan, features various activities highlighting the mosque’s rich history, educational institutions, notable scholars, and its pivotal role in addressing contemporary issues facing the Muslim community.
Attendees will also enjoy documentaries showcasing the mosque’s legacy. The day culminates with a communal Iftar for worshippers.
The history of the establishment of the Al-Azhar Mosque dates back to the year 970 by the Fatimid Caliph Al-Muizz Li-Din Allah. It is considered the third oldest university in the world after Al-Zaytoonah and Al-Qarawiyyin universities.
The significance of this anniversary was officially recognized by the al-Azhar Supreme Council in 2018 under the leadership of Grand Imam Prof Ahmed at-Tayyeb.
