Oman has seen more than 257,000 Covid-19 infections, 2,848 deaths
Oman’s Health Minister Ahmed Mohammed al-Saeedi told the country’s Supreme Committee on Thursday, June 24, that those who spread rumours against the Covid-19 vaccine in the country would be punished by the law of the land, local reports have said.
He was quoted by the reports as saying this after he told the Supreme Committee that most of the people who had died of Covid-19 in the country in April were not vaccinated.
Oman has seen more than 257,000 Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic, of whom 2,848 have died.
The pandemic has also badly affected the economy of the Gulf country, which, the World Bank said in 2020, sent 45% of its exports — 21.7% of its GDP — to China, from where the novel coronavirus was first reported.
The reports also quoted Ahmed as saying that Oman’s health sector was being drained due to the current wave of Covid-19 infection.
They also said the minister hoped that Oman would receive about 3.2 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of September. Oman’s current population is estimated to be around 5 million.
About the tourism season in the country’s Dhofar governorate, Ahmed was quoted as saying that a technical team tasked with studying the issue would submit its report to the Supreme Covid-19 Committee shortly. It would accordingly decide on whether to allow visits to Dhofar.
