Tehran, Iran – Iran has reportedly offered a conditional response to the recent airstrike in Damascus that resulted in the deaths of senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders. According to a report by Jadeh Iran, Iran has communicated to the United States that it would refrain from retaliating to the airstrike if the US can secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
The anonymous source cited in the report, described as an Arab diplomatic source, stated that if the US is successful in calming the situation, it would be seen as a significant achievement for the Biden administration, and there could be potential for further progress. The development comes amidst ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Cairo for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The Damascus airstrike targeted the Iranian consulate, resulting in the death of IRGC commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi and several other IRGC officers. Since then, Iran has issued threats of a “harsh response” against Israel. Reports suggest that Iran could potentially use cruise missiles and kamikaze drones to retaliate, possibly before the end of the month of Ramadan.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi emphasized Israel’s readiness to confront Iran, stating that they are prepared with defensive systems and will act forcefully in cooperation with the USA and regional allies. The situation remains tense as Israel continues to prepare for potential responses to the Damascus airstrike, which both Syria and Iran have blamed on Israel.
