Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday, July 21, that it was barring its citizens from travelling to Indonesia in light of the surge in Covid-19 cases there.
An official source at the Ministry of Interior was quoted by local reports as saying in a statement that the step was taken due to “the Saudi government’s keenness on the safety of citizens wishing to travel abroad.”
The official also cited “the spread of a new mutated strain of the virus, and the health situation in the Republic of Indonesia” as reasons behind this ban.
The official said the ban would stay in place “until the epidemiological situation in Indonesia is stabilized.”
The ministry also called upon Saudi citizens present in Indonesia to exercise caution, stay away from areas witnessing the spread of the virus, follow all precautionary measures, and return sooner to the country.

The seven-day daily average of deaths on Tuesday stood at 1,140, with most deaths reported on Monday: 1,338.
This is the highest surge Indonesia has seen in deaths due to Covid-19 since the pandemic started last year.
