World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has commended the efforts by Bahrain to combat Covid-19 in the country.
He is currently in Bahrain to open a regional office of the WHO in the country, which happens to be the organization’s 152nd in the world.
After being given a tour of the country’s pandemic response facilities while accompanied by WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Director Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari, Ghebreyesus in a series of tweets praised specific aspects of how the country dealt with things.
In one tweet, he hailed the “innovative efforts” by Bahraini health authorities to quickly identify Covid-19 patients, such as drive-through and mobile-testing facilities.
He added: “Mobile facilities include public buses that are repurposed for testing people in their communities.”
In another tweet, Ghebreyesus said: “Another solution I was really impressed by was a car park next to a military hospital, which was transformed — in just a week — into an intensive care unit, with capacity for 130 beds. This included a ventilator for each if needed.”
He showed his approval of the effort by adding a “Bravo” in the tweet.
Local reports quoted Ghebreyesus as saying about the country’s vaccination rate of 70%: “Bahrain’s approach has been fully in line with the WHO’s mandate for universal health coverage and the regional vision of ‘Health for All by All’.”
Bahrain has seen more than 269,000 cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic last year, which has resulted in 1,383 deaths.
