Arab League chief urges cooperation to achieve successful Libya elections

The second Libyan Civil War lasted from 2014 to 2020
  • In a statement, Aboul Gheit urged the concerned parties to adopt dialogue as the only means to resolve the dispute
  • Gheit stressed on the importance of a national consensus on the legal and procedural rules for the elections

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has asked various Libyan parties to keep the country’s interest above any narrow accounts, said local reports.

He reportedly pointed to the dangerous juncture that Libya is going through, and said that everyone should join hands and cooperate to achieve Electoral entitlement soon, which should enable the Libyan people in choosing those expressing their will, and helping to preserve the unity and sovereignty of the state.

In a statement today, Aboul Gheit urged the concerned parties to adopt dialogue as the only means to resolve the dispute, and to exclude options for violence and resort to arms or even brandishing them, local media reports said.

He explained that maintaining the stability of the situation is necessary to enable Libyans to express their will freely through the electoral process.

Reportedly, Aboul Gheit stressed on the importance of a national consensus on the legal and procedural rules for the elections, and respect for and commitment to their results.

Aboul Ghaith was quoted by local sources as saying: “The international will – as has been expressed in more than one forum in recent months – confirms the centrality of holding presidential and parliamentary elections, and ending the foreign military presence in all its forms, as a necessity for Libya’s stability away from the effects of the recent civil war”.
