Aramex vows to cut emissions

Aramex, a global provider of logistics and transportation solutions, announces acquisition of Access USA Shipping (MyUS).
  • Aramex has signed a commitment with the Science Based Target initiative to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
  • The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and WWF

Dubai-based logistics company Aramex has announced in a disclosure to the Dubai Financial Market that it is planning to cut emissions based on strict standards.

It said in the disclosure that it had signed a commitment with the Science Based Target initiative or SBTi to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The SBTi is a partnership between global business-transparency non-profit CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute or WRI, and the World Wide Fund for Nature or WWF.

Aramex said that by signing this commitment, it was pledging to will work with clearly defined science-based carbon targets.

This, it said, would put the company on track to reducing its emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s goals of curbing a rise in global temperature to well below 2°C.

The SBT initiative works by helping companies set science-based emission-reduction targets by first asking them to submit a letter establishing their intent to set an SBT. This is the step Aramex has taken.

The next step is development: working on an emissions reduction target in line with the SBTi’s criteria.

The third step is submission: presenting the company’s target to the SBTi for official validation.

Next comes communication: announcing the company’s target and informing its stakeholders.

The final part is disclosure: reporting company-wide emissions and track target progress annually.

The disclosure quoted Raji Hattar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Aramex, as saying: “Companies in the transport and logistics industry have a major role to play in reducing harmful emissions and support countries to reach their GHG (greenhouse gas) emission targets.”

He added: “Beyond reducing our carbon emissions, we also want to create a positive impact by empowering our peers, suppliers and other stakeholders to follow and take on an active role in protecting the environment.”
