The meeting of the 42nd session of the Supreme Council of the GCC countries, chaired by Saudi Arabia, was  held in Riyadh on Tuesday in an attempt to strengthen the process of joint Gulf cooperation, stability, security, interdependence and integration among the Gulf states.

On behalf of the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, chaired the meeting of the 42nd session of the GCC Supreme Council.

During his opening address at the Summit, the Saudi Crown Prince said the 42nd GCC Summit comes at a time when the region is facing many challenges that require coordinated efforts to enhance the security and stability of GCC nations.

He stressed on the importance of completing the process of economic integration and enhancing the GCC’s regional and international role by ensuring a united political stance as well as developing partnerships with the international community.

He also emphasised on the critical need to strike the right balance necessary to achieve security and stability in global energy markets. He further said it is vital to address climate change by providing the world with clean energy and advancing development and innovation in this field.

The Summit discussed various issues related to cooperation between GCC member countries. The leaders of GCC nations also discussed the progress made in advancing integration and collaboration in various fields to meet the aspirations of the people and shape a glorious new future for the region. The Summit also discussed ways of further enhancing security and prosperity in the GCC region.

Earlier in the day, the leaders and heads of delegations of the GCC countries were received at Diriyah Palace by Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During the session, the leaders of the GCC discussed political issues and security challenges that require intensified efforts to enhance solidarity in order to achieve the hopes and aspirations of its citizens.

The summit discussed topics that contributes to strengthening the process of cooperation and integration among the GCC member states in all fields, as well as discussing the regional and global developments and its impacts of the Gulf States.

The 42nd session was held after an extraordinary circumstances witnessed during the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its ramifications on the Gulf countries especially the economic sector.

Qatar’s emir at the summit

The representative of the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah, the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah attended the summit, while King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa was heading the Bahraini delegation.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani led the Qatari delegation, while UAE’s Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, was heading the Emirati delegation.

The Omani Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs Omani Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs Fahad Bin Mahmoud Al-Saeed represented the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, in the summit.
