Expo 2020 Dubai warns of fraud over Coldplay concert tickets

  • Each ticket has a QR code that can be scanned only once, to deter exactly such practices

Expo 2020 Dubai has warned people against a possible case of ticket fraud around an upcoming concert.

A series of tweets from the Expo 2020 official Twitter handle said the authorities were aware of some free tickets being resold.

It said in a statement that it was aware that some free tickets for the February 15 concert of British music band Coldplay were being resold online for money.

“We caution visitors against paying money to an untrusted source,” said the authorities in the statement.

The statement went on to explain: “The original purchaser may distribute more than one copy of the same ticket, thus leading to fraudulent sales.”

Each ticket has a unique QR code, which can only be used once.

The statement cautioned: “Anyone arriving with a QR code that has already been used will not gain entry to the concert venue.”

What this effectively means is that if the original holder of the ticket arrives after someone holding a copy has already been scanned in, the first individual would not be allowed entry to the concert.

The same applies for any number of people holding copies of the original ticket if the original ticket-holder has already been scanned in.

However, Expo 2020 Dubai did not entirely discourage people from watching the concert, noting that there were other ways to see it.

It said in the statement: “Visitors also have the option to watch Coldplay on the big screens at Jubilee Park, Festival Garden, and Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre where access is granted on a first-come, first-served basis.”

The concert will apparently be live-streamed on Expo 2020 virtual online portal, its YouTube channel, and on Expo TV.
