Jordan’s online payment system records transactions worth $13.4bn

Online bill payments through National Electronic Payment System in Jordan surged 27 percent in 2021 to JD 9.5 billion ($13.4bn).

It involved 34 million transactions, with 51 percent increase year-on-year, said Governor of Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) Adel Sharkas.

He noted mobile phone payments soared 107 percent in volume with 25 million transactions, while its value grew 117 percent from 2020 to JD2 bn in 2022.

CBJ’s 2021 report on Jordan’s payment system said paper payment instruments such as checks, numbered 10 million, with a value of around JD49 billion.

Local banks issued about 4.5 million various types of cards (credit, debit, prepaid).

Also, payment and electronic money transfer companies issued around 148,000 credit and prepaid cards.

Sharkas said the number of ATMs in the Kingdom reached 2,195, while the number of POS terminals reached 44,314.

The use of electronic channels such as ATMs, the Internet, and mobile phones increased significantly over the past year.

This covered 67 percent of all payment transactions against 33 percent made over the counter, Sharkas noted.
