Dubai, UAE – The evolving security landscape presents a challenge for organizations trying to keep pace with emerging threats. As the requirement to safeguard data, finances and reputation increases, more organizations are relying on channel partners for support. Today, online interactions dominate daily operations and the internet presents both opportunities and risks. As an example, we are seeing continued growth in DDoS (distributed denial of service) threats in both quantity and sophistication.

DDoS attacks have evolved from simple nuisances to highly sophisticated and coordinated assaults, posing a significant threat to online businesses. This calls for proactive defence measures from organizations and cybersecurity professionals.

Modern DDoS Attacks Get Smarter and More Disruptive

DDoS attacks overwhelm online services by flooding them with high volumes of traffic, rendering them inaccessible to legitimate users. Traditionally executed through botnets, which are controlled networks of compromised computers. However, as technology advances, so do the methods employed by cybercriminals.

Modern DDoS attacks are not only larger in scale, but they also are smarter and more targeted. Today’s attackers use various techniques, including amplification attacks, which exploit internet protocol vulnerabilities to multiply attack traffic, making mitigation challenging.

Additionally, threat actors can employ artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to identify vulnerabilities and adapt their tactics in real-time, making it difficult for conventional security measures to keep up.

To put this all into perspective, NETSCOUT’s latest DDoS Threat Intelligence Report for the first half of 2023 revealed a staggering increase in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, totalling approximately 7.9 million. This is an increase of 31% compared to the previous year, and equivalent to 44,000 attacks per day. These attacks were observed across 130 countries and territories, affecting 483 industry verticals, with Saudi Arabia experiencing the highest attack counts in the EMEA region at 1194.

Notably, the telecommunications sector emerged as the primary target among all industry verticals. This surge in DDoS attacks can be attributed to global events such as the Russia-Ukraine war and NATO bids. Finland, Turkey, Hungary, Sweden, and other countries faced ideologically motivated DDoS attacks, with incidents escalating, including a massive 500 Gbps attack in Sweden during its NATO bid. These attacks highlight the growing geopolitical impact on cybersecurity, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and advanced mitigation strategies to safeguard digital infrastructures worldwide.

The increasing frequency and severity of these attacks across various sectors, including finance, e-commerce, healthcare, and government, highlight the urgent need for advanced defences across digital infrastructures worldwide.

DDoS attacks not only lead to financial losses and reputational harm but they can also serve as diversion tactics for other malicious activities like data breaches or malware injections. As such, organizations should adopt proactive measures to protect their digital assets and customer data, with a shared responsibility among IT professionals, cybersecurity experts and the broader business community. This includes channel partners who often provide crucial mitigation solutions to their customers.

Channel partners play a central role in empowering enterprises with strong DDoS mitigation strategies. They provide support to customers navigating the complexities of today’s DDoS landscape in different ways.

The Crucial Role of Channel Partners in Tailored DDoS Mitigation Solutions

Channel partners and resellers serve as the bridge between cybersecurity solution providers and enterprises, possessing a deep understanding of business needs and the vulnerabilities that exist across industries. Using this insight, they can deliver customized DDoS mitigation solutions tailored to specific operational nuances, boosting defence against evolving threats.

As trusted advisors, these partners educate enterprises on the increasing risk of DDoS attacks, aiding in the selection of appropriate mitigation tools and the implementation of multi-layered defence strategies, particularly beneficial for smaller organizations lacking in-house cybersecurity expertise.

Collaboration with cybersecurity vendors enables channel partners to offer a curated portfolio of advanced DDoS mitigation solutions, ensuring access to cutting-edge technologies to combat modern attack methods effectively. To accommodate the varying sizes and resources of enterprises, channel partners prioritize scalable mitigation solutions, democratizing access to high-quality cybersecurity measures and fortifying the digital landscape with cost-effective options.

Sophisticated technology to counter sophisticated threats

Mitigating DDoS threats is not a one-time effort – it requires continuous vigilance and adaptation. This strategy enables network operators to suppress DDoS attacks at various entry points, covering the entire network edge and pre-empting large-scale assaults. By deploying edge-based attack detection and employing effective mitigation techniques at every network access point, operations can establish adaptive DDoS suppression systems capable of combating attack volumes and cybercriminal innovations.

Routine testing of online defences is crucial, yet often overlooked. Why does every company have a regular fire alarm test but not a DDoS test?

Channel partners play a pivotal role in educating their customers on cyber hygiene basics, empowering them to defend against emerging threats. Remaining well-informed on evolving trends is paramount, enabling organizations to proactively prepare for potential threats. Channel partners contribute by engaging in scenario-based training exercises, simulating DDoS attacks to enhance technical readiness and bolster confidence in effective response capabilities during high-pressure situations.

Leveraging threat intelligence in the fight against DDoS attacks

Another effective tool against sophisticated DDoS attacks is threat intelligence, a strategy channel partners are advocating by recommending cybersecurity vendors that prioritize real-time threat intelligence feeds and analysis. By understanding attackers’ tactics, businesses can anticipate potential DDoS campaigns and reinforce their defences proactively. Moreover, threat intelligence empowers enterprises to recognise patterns and trends in cybercriminal activities, enabling adjustments to cybersecurity strategies for staying ahead of threat actors.

In the ongoing battle between cybercriminals and businesses, channel partners and resellers serve as crucial allies, offering not just products but also expertise, guidance and proactive support. Their role transcends mere transactions – it’s about transformation. By understanding clients’ unique challenges, supporting regular defence testing, curating advanced DDoS mitigation technologies, providing continuous assistance, and harnessing threat intelligence, channel partners and resellers can truly shape resilient cybersecurity landscapes.
