Dubai, UAE – Seeking to enhance tourism revenue and increase visitor numbers across the Gulf region, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are in discussions to introduce a unified visa system similar to the Schengen zone visa in Europe.

During a panel discussion on “The Future of Travel for the GCC” at the Arabian Travel Market, Bahrain’s Minister of Tourism, Fatima Al Sairafi, revealed that ministerial-level talks are underway among the GCC nations to achieve a single visa agreement.

“We see that happening very soon because we see people flying from abroad to Europe usually spending their time in several countries rather than in one country. We really saw the value this can bring not to each country but all of us,” said Al Sairafi.

Al Sairafi highlighted the success of co-promoting Bahrain alongside the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which resulted in increased tourist numbers. She emphasized the potential benefits of a unified destination for all GCC countries, facilitated by collaboration with tour operators.

Abdullah Al Saleh, undersecretary for the UAE’s Ministry of Economy, emphasized the importance of the tourism sector for economic growth in all GCC countries. He was quoted as saying in local media reports that a unified approach would enable the GCC to benefit from both the supply and demand sides of the tourism industry.

Al Saleh added that GCC countries aim to provide a seamless travel experience for visitors, allowing them to explore multiple countries within the region without restrictions. The implementation of a unified visa system and the promotion of the GCC as a unique destination are part of the comprehensive vision for the region, he reportedly said.

Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of Saudi Tourism Authority, highlighted the evolving preferences of modern travelers who look for regional experiences rather than focusing on individual countries. He cited the success of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which demonstrated the potential of joint offerings to benefit all GCC countries.

The unified GCC visa strategy aims to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to GDP, create employment opportunities for nationals, enhance competitiveness, and ensure the sustainability of the sector.

The specific details of the visa program, including the list of countries eligible for the unified visa, have not been disclosed. However, it is expected to facilitate travel for nationals, residents, tourists, and business visitors from a range of Arab and foreign countries.

The implementation of a unified visa system within the GCC follows the successful model of the European Schengen zone, providing a significant boost to tourism and easing travel between member states. The initiative is set to further strengthen the GCC’s position as an attractive and accessible tourist destination.
