  • Petra received the majority of its visitors, nearly 150,000 of all nationalities, in the fourth quarter of 2021

The number of visitors to Petra city saw a hike of 118 percent at the end of 2021 compared to 2020, which has seen a decline in tourists traffic due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A total of 236,088 tourists of all nationalities visited the city, including 135,064 non-Arab visitors, 16,026 Arabs 11,615 and 84,776 Jordanians, according to Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) statistics.

The city, the figures further revealed, received the majority of its visitors, nearly 150,000 of all nationalities, in the fourth quarter of 2021, which is an indicator of the tourism sector recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There are strong indications that tourism is resuming its normal form in Petra,” PDTRA Chief Commissioner Suleiman Farajat told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Sunday.

He expressed hope that the growth of tourism traffic to the city would keep increasing.

PDTRA is on the verge of completing several projects that would serve the tourism sector in Red Rose City, which, due to the pandemic, has suffered a significant decline in tourism traffic. Many businesses were shut down, affecting more than 80 per cent of its residents.
