Amman, Jordan – Jordan’s trade exchange with countries it has free trade agreements with accounted for a significant portion of its overall trade in 2022, amounting to 58 percent, as per data published by the Amman Chamber of Commerce. The total value of these exchanges surpassed $23 billion, with more than half of that sum attributed to trade with Arab countries.

Jordan has actively pursued free trade agreements with international and bilateral economic blocs. The country joined the Greater Arab Free Trade Area in 1978, solidifying its economic ties within the region. Subsequently, the free trade agreement with the United States came into force in 2001, followed by the Jordanian-European Partnership in 2002.

The country entered into a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway, which took effect in 2002. Another notable agreement was forged with Singapore in 2005.

Jordan further expanded its economic cooperation by signing an agreement to establish the Arab and Mediterranean countries’ Agadir Agreement, which created a free trade exchange zone. This agreement includes Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan.

Jordan has also free trade agreements in place with Canada and the United Kingdom.

Among Jordan’s trade partners, the countries within the Greater Arab Free Trade Zone accounted for over half of the nation’s trade with agreement countries, reaching a value of $12.299 billion. This figure represented 31 percent of Jordan’s total foreign exchange. Following closely were the European Union countries, with a trade value of $4.880 billion, and the United States, with a trade value of $3.973 billion.

In 2022, Jordan’s trade with Agadir countries amounted to $1.162 billion, while its trade with the EFTA bloc totaled $1.055 billion. The Jordanian-British agreement facilitated a trade volume of $312 million, with Canada reaching $168 million and Singapore at $57 million.
