Ukraine crisis threatens Arab wheat supplies

Russia and Ukraine are largest exporters of wheat.
  • Russia is the largest producer of crude oil, second largest producer of gas and the largest exporter of wheat.
  • Many Arab countries depend on Russia for their wheat imports and fear disruption in supplies.

In the build-up to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, European countries fretted disruption in gas supplies as Russia is the second largest producer of gas after the United States.

As a result, they looked up to Qatar, the sixth largest producer of gas and the largest producer of liquefied natural gas, in case the imminent sanctions on Russia shut the possibility of imports.

Russia is also the largest producer of crude oil. The Ukraine crisis already raised the crude prices to a record high a few days ago. If the crisis prolongs, supplies, exports and imports of several other commodities are likely to be affected.

The two countries at loggerheads with each other, Russia and Ukraine, also happen to be the biggest exporters of wheat and the countries that import the grain have started feeling the heat, prompting countries like India, which is the second largest producer of wheat, to smell an opportunity and plug the export void.

TRENDS looks at the impact of the conflict on the wheat imports of Arab countries.
