Qatar pledges $100m for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine

Kyiv, Ukraine – Qatar has pledged $100 million for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine. The funds were meant the rehabilitation of health and education infrastructure, provision of drinking water, and humanitarian services, in addition to allocating 50 scholarships, during the school year 2023-2024, to Ukrainian students in Qatari universities.

The visiting Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani announced this at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Denis Shmyhal. He said that Qatar had contributed $20 million to support the Ukrainian grain export initiative. Jassim Al-Thani reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine and its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, He underlined the need to adhere to the Charter of the United Nations and the established principles of international law, including the obligation to settle international disputes by peaceful means. 

Shmyhal said that the money will be channelled for reconstruction in the health and education sectors, humanitarian de-mining, and other important social and humanitarian projects..

Shmyhal said they had discussed Ukraine’s peace formula – a 10-point peace plan that calls for nuclear, energy, and food security, restoration of borders, and other points.

He thanked Qatar for its readiness to mediate in efforts to repatriate thousands of Ukrainian children taken to Russia since Moscow’s invasion.
