Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia is planning to start air mobility that is most advanced and safest in the Middle East.
The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is spearheading the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) initiative that encompasses a spectrum of innovative solutions, ranging from small, unmanned aircraft to vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, Saudi Gazette reported.
The objective is to establish safe, sustainable, and efficient air transport options for both passengers and goods. The initiative seeks to ease traffic congestion, enhance accessibility to remote areas, and contribute to overall economic and social development.
Captain Sulaiman Al-Muhaymedi, Executive Vice President of GACA for Aviation Safety and Environmental Sustainability, highlighted that the AAM initiative entails a comprehensive roadmap positioning AAM at the forefront of the aviation industry.
The transformative impact extends to passenger mobility, goods transportation, emergency response, medical evacuation, and disaster relief. Emphasizing environmental sustainability, Al-Muhaymedi noted successful tests conducted in diverse terrains and climatic conditions within the Kingdom, showcasing positive outcomes that can alleviate traffic congestion and reduce road accidents.
Saudi Arabia aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2060. The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has introduced the Green Saudi Initiative and the Green Middle East Initiative, aligning with global goals.
In 2022, GACA initiated a draft plan to enhance environmental sustainability in civil aviation, featuring the “Enabling AAM in the Kingdom” initiative. This aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, positioning the Kingdom as a global aviation hub and a pioneer in future transportation.
International collaboration is integral to the AAM journey, as Saudi Arabia has signed memoranda of understanding with countries like South Korea, Singapore, and China. Agreements with leading companies in AAM aircraft design and manufacturing aim to secure an advanced position, particularly in safety and development sectors.
