London, United Kingdom–A UN Security Council resolution calling for the immediate acceleration of aid to Gaza is “good news”, the UK government said on Friday as it reiterated calls for a “sustainable ceasefire”.
“It is good news that the UN has come together to back a resolution to get more humanitarian aid into Gaza,” UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said.
The minister’s remarks came after the United Nations Security Council voted to approve a watered-down resolution that demands all sides in the Israel-Hamas conflict allow the “safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale.”
Russia and the United States, which both could have vetoed the measure as permanent members of the council, abstained, meaning it passed with 13 votes in favour.
After days of delays, the resolution also called for the creation of “conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities” but did not call for an immediate end to fighting.
“Crucially, the resolution also calls for steps towards a sustainable ceasefire,” Cameron said.
“This is an outcome that I advocated for last week along with the German Foreign Minister and strongly think is the right approach.”
Cameron said that reaching agreement within the UN had been “a difficult process” but that there was now “greater unity and purpose” about what needs to happen to relieve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
