Baghdad, Iraq – Iraq has signed a preliminary agreement with Turkmenistan to import gas. The agreement signed by the undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for gas affairs Ezzat Saber, is a big step in Iraq’s quest for diversified energy sources.
In a statement to Iraqi News Agency, Saber, said: “We have reached a significant understanding with the Republic of Turkmenistan on the import of gas.”
Saber outlined the core agreement, stating: “We have, in principle, agreed to the importation of specific gas quantities to address a portion of our electricity generation requirements.”
Outlining the path ahead, he added: “We are actively collaborating on crafting a comprehensive memorandum of cooperation, expected to be finalized before the year concludes. This memorandum will encapsulate the proposed gas volumes and the intricate mechanisms governing our bilateral engagement.”
“This agreement holds immense significance,” Saber remarked, “as it represents a notable stride towards forging stronger ties with gas-producing nations.”
Turkmenistan is known for its status as a key gas producer regionally and globally. The country’s natural gas reserves are estimated at 50 trillion cubic meters.
