Doha, Qatar – Qatar is to expand its scheme to boost the power supply in Syria by paying for deliveries of Azerbaijani gas through Turkey, the Gulf state’s development fund announced on Thursday.
A first phase of the Qatari scheme to fund gas supplies for power generation rolled out in March via Jordan and provided 400 megawatts of electricity per day.
The new deliveries will be received at Aleppo power station from Saturday and the electricity will be supplied to “various cities and neighbourhoods”, the Qatar Fund for Development said.
Qatar and Turkey are among the leading foreign supporters of the Islamist-led interim government formed in Syria following the overthrow of longtime president Bashar al-Assad in December.
