The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has listed 22 Libyan archaeological sites on the list of heritage in the Islamic world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity in Libya stated that the Libyan ambassador to Morocco, Abu Bakr Ibrahim Al-Taweel, received the certificates of registration of Libyan heritage sites, during the 10th session of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World held in Rabat.
The archaeological sites registered and published by the ministry included Murzuq Castle, Qasr al-Hajj and nine mosques in Tripoli, Zliten and Awjilah, in addition to other sites in Gharyan, Janzour and Ajdabiya.
At its 10th session, the Heritage Committee of the ISESCO announced the registration of 49 historical sites and cultural elements on the final list: 21 historical sites (tangible heritage) and 28 cultural elements (intangible heritage), distributed over 10 member states of ISESCO.
After studying the files submitted for registration on ISESCO’s heritage lists, 22 sites in Libya were listed.
