Fitness Time to unveil a women-only gym facility in Riyadh

    • The low-cost gym will not have a swimming pool

    • The country has eased restrictions for women over the past few years

Health and fitness seem to be a big concern for women in Saudi Arabia just as it is everywhere in the world, and to cope with the demand for more facilities to work out, popular Saudi gym Fitness Time is opening a women-only facility in Riyadh, it announced Wednesday in a bourse filing.

The conservative country has taken steps in the last few years to ease restrictions for women like allowing them to drive after the ban on driving was lifted nearly three years ago. More and more women are joining the workforce and some women have gone on to assume leadership roles in many companies.

The new low-cost gym will have equipment from Technogym, but unlike other centers, it will not have a swimming pool. This will allow Fitness Time to offer cheaper prices and help its clubs become accessible, it said.

Called the Fitness Time Ladies Xpress, the gym will be located on Dirab Road in Riyadh’s Al-Marwah District. It will have a total area of 900 square meters. The company said more openings would be announced in the coming weeks. Fitness Time now operates 135 gyms within and outside Saudi Arabia.
