The fifth edition of the Al Dhaid Date Festival will start on Thursday, July 22, at Expo Al Dhaid with prizes worth AED1.5 million (around $408,300), said local reports on Wednesday.

The four-day event is organized by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said the reports.

This year’s festival will reportedly see the participation of dozens of palm-growers from Sharjah and other emirates of the UAE.

It is expected to showcase a variety of activities and contests between palm-owners and farmers who will display various types of dates of 2021 production.

Prizes for the winners will range from AED2,000 to AED30,000 ($544-8,167), for a total prize money of AED1.5 million (around $408,300).

This year’s edition will have two new categories — one for the local mango and the other for yellow and red figs — in addition to other categories.

The conditions for entering the competitions stipulate that the dates must be locally produced, said the local reports.

All contestants should show up with their documents upon registration, swear an oath, and visit some farms, they added.

SCCI, the organizer, has put in place several health measures for the festival this year, after the event was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
