In the build-up to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, European countries fretted disruption in gas supplies as Russia is the second largest producer of gas after the United States.
As a result, they looked up to Qatar, the sixth largest producer of gas and the largest producer of liquefied natural gas, in case the imminent sanctions on Russia shut the possibility of imports.
