Iraq has said on Monday, October 11, that it has captured the financial head of Daesh, or the Islamic State group.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi said on Twitter that Sami Jasim Muhammad al-Jaburi, also known as just Sami Jasim or Hajji Hamid had been arrested.

He was said to have been captured by the Iraqi National Intelligence Service or INIS following what Kadhimi said was a “complex operation.”

Sami Jasim.

Jasim allegedly served as a deputy to former Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Kadhimi said on Twitter that Jasim was arrested by INIS “outside the borders” of Iraq.

Referring to the internal Iraqi Security Forces and INIS, Kadhimi tweeted: “While our ISF heroes focused on securing the elections, their INIS colleagues were conducting a complex external operation to capture Sami Jasim, who was in charge of Daesh finance, and a deputy of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi. Long live Iraq, and our brave heroes. [sic]”

Jasim is said to have supervised Daesh’s revenue-generating operations from illicit sales of oil, gas, antiquities, and minerals for some time since 2014 in Mosul.

According to the US Department of State’s Counter-Terrorism Rewards Program called Rewards for Justice, Jasim had a reward of up to $5 million on his head.

The US Department of the Treasury designated him a global terrorist in September 2015, pursuant to an order that places financial sanctions on terrorists and those providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism.
