US President Donald Trump said the United States and Israel had agreed to suspend planned strikes on Iran after Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries requested more time to finalise a deal.
In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said the proposed agreement would include the “immediate, complete, and total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
“Based on this request, I have agreed… to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” Trump wrote, adding that Israel had agreed to join the US effort to complete the agreement and end the conflict.
Iran did not immediately respond publicly to Trump’s announcement.
Separately, a source familiar with the matter told Axios that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump during a phone call on Saturday not to escalate the conflict with Iran, warning that strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure could trigger retaliation against Gulf states’ energy facilities.
Eight killed in overnight Israeli strikes on Gaza
At least eight Palestinians were killed in overnight Israeli strikes across Gaza despite Trump’s announcement of a diplomatic breakthrough linked to the wider regional conflict.
The strikes came days after Hamas said it had agreed to a plan championed by Trump that includes handing over its weapons and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
According to Gaza’s civil defence, Israeli strikes around midnight hit several residential buildings.
A man and his wife were killed when an Israeli military helicopter struck an apartment in central Gaza, while an elderly man and a child were killed in a separate attack west of Gaza City.
Three more people, including a child, were killed when another strike hit an apartment northwest of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
The latest deaths followed Israeli strikes on Saturday that killed eight other people, including attacks that damaged a hospital’s medical supplies and hit a rooftop, according to local authorities.
Israeli forces have detained three Palestinians in the Dheisheh refugee camp, south of Bethlehem, and two in Nablus, according to the Wafa news agency.
The agency said Israeli forces raided homes in central Bethlehem and threatening signs were posted on the walls of the Salah al-Din Mosque in the area.
Raids across the occupied West Bank intensified this past week. Israeli soldiers and settlers attacked homes, farmland and other property. Israeli forces have reportedly used live fire, stun grenades and tear gas in the raids.
