Dubai, UAE — Abu Dhabi-based Fertiglobe, a strategic partnership between ADNOC and OCI Global, has completed the maiden shipment of the world’s first internationally recognized renewable ammonia with ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certification.
The renewable ammonia, generated at Fertiglobe’s facilities in Egypt utilizing renewable hydrogen from its Egypt Green Hydrogen electrolyser pilot, marks a significant step toward sustainable production, Fertiglobe said.
This eco-friendly ammonia will play a crucial role in producing near-zero emissions synthetic soda ash, a vital component in laundry powder, for consumer goods giant Unilever.
OCI Global facilitated the inaugural shipment, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of the partnership. The consignment was dispatched to Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (TFL), tasked with producing the soda ash for Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Unilever’s business unit in India.
Ahmed El-Hoshy, the CEO of Fertiglobe and OCI Global, said, “This shipment is an important milestone for Fertiglobe, a breakthrough in producing and supplying renewable ammonia to the world, and for the ongoing execution of our hydrogen roadmap.”
Fertiglobe is actively involved in sustainability initiatives, such as the Egypt Green Hydrogen project, a collaboration with Scatec, Orascom Construction, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt.
This project aims to produce up to 15,000 tons per annum of green hydrogen, serving as feedstock for generating up to 90,000 tons per annum of renewable ammonia in the Suez Canal Economic Zone in Egypt.
Other notable Fertiglobe projects include the Ta’ziz 1 million tpa low-carbon ammonia project, a low-carbon ammonia pilot in the UAE at Fertil, and a green hydrogen project in the UAE.
