ILO selects Qatar as member of fair recruitment panel

  • The selection of Qatar as a member of the committee reflected its progress in promoting fair employment, said official sources
  • It also demonstrated Qatar’s commitment to labor migration and fair recruitment through a human rights-based approach, they added

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has chosen Qatar as a member of the Advisory Committee of the its Fair Recruitment Initiative, according to official sources.

The country will be among five governments in the panel, said the sources.

The move is said to have been made in appreciation of Qatar’s efforts and reforms undertaken in the labor sector.

The selection of Qatar as a member of the committee reflected its progress in promoting fair employment in line with the ILO principles, said the sources.

It also demonstrated the commitment of Qatar to labor migration and fair recruitment through a human rights-based approach, they added.

The ILO Fair Recruitment Initiative Advisory Committee is expected to work to guide the activities of the ILO Fair Recruitment Initiative, identifying priority issues in line with the organization’s 2020-2025 strategy.

The committee will reportedly also monitor the implementation of the Fair Employment Initiative, discussing progress towards the set goals, providing strategic direction, and proposing alternative measures to overcome challenges.

The committee is also expected to provide the necessary guidance to establish a “knowledge center” for the ILO, propose ideas and projects to promote discussion of key issues, and hold periodic meetings as needed.

On Wednesday, the committee held its first meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, with the participation of Mahmood Al Siddiqi, representative of Qatar’s Ministry of Labor at the ILO.
