Jordan Senate, Arab Parliament speakers discuss regional issues

  • The Jordan Senate Speaker stressed the need for Arab parliaments to play a more effective role in addressing the region's challenges.

AMMAN,  JORDAN –   The Speaker of Jordan’s Senate Faisal Fayez met with Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Abdulrahman Al-Asoomi and discussed the ways and means to activate parliamentary work and diplomacy to address the region’s common interest.

During the meeting, attended by Jordan’s ambassador to Egypt Amjad Adaileh, the two sides underscored the significance of restoring security and stability in the Arab region, a statement by the Senate said on Thursday.

Fayez, who is heading a Senate delegation to Cairo at the invitation of the Egyptian Senate Speaker, stressed the need for Arab parliaments to play a more effective role in addressing the region’s challenges, foremost of which are issues of poverty, unemployment and economic development.

“The priority of Arab parliamentary action should focus, at the current stage, on finding economic integration to meet the challenges of sustainable development,” he said.

He also renewed  his call for establishing an economic and customs union for Arab countries.

Al-Asoomi hailed Jordan King Abdullah’s efforts in strengthening joint Arab action, bringing peace and stability to the region and ending political conflicts.

The Senate speaker and his accompanying delegation on Thursday visited the Jordanian embassy in Cairo and appreciated the efforts made to foster Jordanian-Egyptian ties.
