Turkish president, UN chief discuss grain deal over phone, Sudan situation

Ankara, Turkey  – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday discussed over the phone with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres the developments in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and the ones in Syria and Sudan.

Underlining the importance of the continuation of the Black Sea grain deal, Erdogan said that Turkiye is ready to participate in the working group to be formed with an inter-institutional delegation in case of an agreement on the ammonia pipeline.

On Syria, he said that the extension of the cross-border aid mechanism to Syria in July will be of “great importance.”

Regarding Sudan, Turkish President said that Turkiye is ready to cooperate with the UN in order to invite again the parties in Sudan to peace talks and to help resolve their differences.

Earlier in last week of April, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed during a phone call with UN Secretary-General the deal to ship grain across the Black Sea.

Later, in the first week of April,  Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visted Turkey to hold on extending the grain deal.

The renewal of a deal signed last July unblocks Ukraine’s ports and allows it to export grain to the rest of the world was agreed in March, but instead of the usual 120 days, Moscow only agreed to 60 days.

Turkey has acted as a broker for the deal together with the UN.
