Saudi Arabia inaugurates its second “House of Culture”

  • Each “House of Culture” in the Kingdom has a strategic plan for sustainability and activation
  • These cultural houses feature various sections, including learning areas, a kids’ theater, a main stage, and reading spaces

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Culture Ministry’s Libraries Commission opened another “House of Culture” in the Asir region on Sunday, marking the second opening this month following the one in the Eastern Region.

On his part, Libraries Commission CEO Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Asim highlighted to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) the need for a fresh approach to libraries.

Each “House of Culture” in the Kingdom has a strategic plan for sustainability and activation, offering a range of cultural activities for all community segments, including children, adolescents, writers, intellectuals, and artists.

Dr. Al-Asim informed SPA that the project is designed to meet the needs and aspirations of visitors through thoughtful architectural design, comprehensive facilities, and a well-planned annual schedule of events.

With the ongoing evolution of Saudi Arabia’s cultural scene since the launch of its National Culture Strategy, institutions are focusing on embedding culture as a lifestyle. The “House of Culture” concept is central to this strategy, transforming libraries from mere book storage facilities into platforms that uplift local communities’ quality of life.

These cultural houses feature various sections, including learning areas, a kids’ theater, a main stage, and reading spaces within the library. They also offer innovation and tech spaces, prayer rooms, meeting areas, printing and computer services, a café, and a store. As part of the “Quality of Life” program, these houses aim to upgrade cultural infrastructure and boost Saudi engagement in arts and culture as part of the Kingdom’s Vision2030.

Out of the 153 planned cultural houses, these first two openings signify a major step forward. Since its soft opening four months ago, the “House of Culture” in Ahad Rafidah has welcomed nearly 30,000 visitors, according to SPA.

Dr. Al-Asim expressed optimism to SPA that these initiatives will bring tangible benefits to society, encouraging investment in hobbies and interests while fostering a vibrant cultural and social scene.
