Iran rejects Israel’s ‘baseless accusations’ over ship attack

    • The MT Mercer Street, managed by prominent Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, was struck on Thursday off the coast of Oman
    • Two crew members were killed, a British security guard and a Romanian crew member

Iran on Sunday rejected Israel’s “baseless accusations” of being behind a deadly tanker attack off Oman, vowing to defend its interests after its arch-foe pushed for UN action against Tehran.

The MT Mercer Street, managed by prominent Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, was struck on Thursday off the coast of Oman, in an incident Israel has blamed on Iran.

Two crew members were killed, a British security guard and a Romanian crew member, in what the US military and the vessel’s operator Zodiac Maritime said appeared to be a drone strike.

The United States on Sunday blamed Iran for a deadly attack on an Israeli tanker off Oman and vowed an “appropriate response” was forthcoming.

“Upon review of the available information, we are confident that Iran conducted this attack,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement, adding that the attack was carried out using a drone.

“We are working with our partners to consider our next steps and consulting with governments inside the region and beyond on an appropriate response, which will be forthcoming,” Blinken added.

Britain also said on Sunday it believes Iran deliberately carried out the attack in “a clear violation of international law.”
