Expo 2020: AR Rahman introduces Firdaus Orchestra

The all-woman Firdaus Orchestra, brought together by AR Rahman for Expo 2020 Dubai.
  • The Firdaus Orchestra will perform at concerts at Expo 2020 Dubai
  • The concerts will feature works composed by Rahman for the orchestra’s inaugural performance

Expo 2020 Dubai has released the official video in which world-renowned music composer AR Rahman has introduced the all-female Firdaus Orchestra.

The two-minute-10-second video has been shared by both Expo 2020 Dubai and AR Rahman on platforms including YouTube.

It showcases the 50 musicians — aged between 16 and 51 — from 23 countries in the region who have come together to form this group.

The video sees them play a regionalized version of the piece Turkish March by arguably the most famous Western classical composer: Mozart

The musical piece in the video has been produced by Rahman, who also has the moniker Mozart of Madras, based on his city of birth that is now known as Chennai.

The piece has been adapted to this arrangement by Nikolai Managazze, with Mayssa Karaa as the musical and creative lead.

Karaa, a Lebanese-American Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, is also one of the performers of the expo’s official song.

The Firdaus Orchestra, which has been mentored by Rahman since the day he handpicked them based on their applications as part of Expo 2020, will perform at concerts at the event.

Starting from October 23, the concerts are expected to feature works composed by Rahman for the orchestra’s inaugural performance on the global stage.

Tickets to the concerts and performances by the Firdaus Orchestra are available on the official website of Expo 2020.
